Business Not Showing on Google Maps? How to Fix It

First figure out whether your profile is missing entirely or just not ranking, then fix the right problem.

Is your business missing, or just not ranking?

Search Google Maps for your exact business name. If your profile doesn't appear, Google isn't showing it at all, and the cause is usually verification, a suspension, a duplicate, or a recent change. If it does appear for your name but not for searches like "plumber near me," the profile is live and you have a ranking problem instead.

Those two problems have completely different fixes, so settle which one you have before changing anything.

Two different problems

Missing: no result even for your exact business name. Not ranking: you show up for your name, but competitors show up when people search for the service.

How to check whether your business shows on Google

Check from the place your customers search from, not just from your desk. Google Maps results depend heavily on where the searcher is, so a business that shows up two blocks away may not show up across town.

  • Search your exact business name in Google Maps and in regular Google Search.
  • Try the name plus your city, in case the name is common.
  • Use a private browser window, or a phone that isn't signed in to your account, so your own history doesn't shape the results.
  • For service searches, check from a few different spots in your area, or ask a customer or friend who lives there to search and send you a screenshot.

Also look in the Business Profile itself while signed in. Google often shows a status message there, such as a pending verification or a suspension, that explains the problem directly.

Why your business is missing from Google Maps entirely

If even your exact business name returns nothing, one of these is the most likely cause. Work through them in order.

  • The profile isn't verified. Unverified profiles often don't show publicly, or show with limited information. If verification is stuck, see Google Business Profile verification not working.
  • The profile is suspended. Google may remove a suspended profile from Maps and Search. Signing in will usually show a notice. See what to do when your profile is suspended.
  • A duplicate is being shown instead. If two listings exist for the same business, Google may filter one out. Search for older listings with your phone number or previous address. Our guide to duplicate Google Business listings explains how to find and resolve them.
  • You recently moved or made a big edit. Changing the name, address, or primary category can send the profile back for review, and it may not show normally until that review finishes.
  • The profile is marked closed. A profile marked "permanently closed," whether by you or through an edit someone else suggested, may drop out of results or show with a closed label. Check the profile's status and reopen it if it was marked by mistake.

Brand-new profiles also take time. Google doesn't publish how long a new, verified profile takes to appear everywhere, but it isn't always immediate.

Once you've found the likely cause, fix that one thing and give Google time to process it before you change anything else. If you still can't find a cause and the profile shows no notice when you sign in, contact Google Business Profile support with the business name, address, and a short description of what you've checked.

Why your business shows for its name but not for "near me" searches

If customers can find you by name but not by searching for what you do, the profile is working and Google is choosing other businesses for those searches. That's a ranking problem, not a listing problem.

Google says it ranks local results on three things: how relevant a business is to the search, how far it is from the searcher, and how well known it is. A few common reasons you're being passed over:

  • The primary category doesn't match the search. If people search "roofer" and your primary category is "general contractor," you're starting at a disadvantage.
  • The searcher is too far away. Distance is a large factor, and you can't change it. A business usually ranks best close to its own location.
  • Competitors have more reviews or a more complete profile. Fewer reviews, missing services, few photos, or out-of-date hours can all count against you.
  • Your website doesn't support the profile. A thin site, or one that doesn't mention the service or the area, gives Google less to work with.

Our guide to how to rank higher on Google Maps covers each of these in detail.

Showing on Maps but not in Google Search, or the other way round

The same Business Profile powers both Google Maps and the local results in Google Search, but the two don't always display the same businesses. Search shows a short local pack of a few businesses, while Maps shows a longer list you can scroll. You may appear on Maps but fall just outside the short list in Search.

If you appear in one and not the other for your exact business name, give it a little time after any recent change, then check again from a different device. If it persists, treat it as a missing-profile problem and work through the causes above.

What not to do while you fix it

Don't start a second profile

Creating a new profile because the old one isn't showing is the most common mistake. It creates a duplicate, which can get both profiles filtered or suspended.

  • Don't add keywords or a city to your business name to try to show up. It breaks Google's guidelines and is a common cause of suspension.
  • Don't make several big edits at once. Each change to a key field can trigger another review.
  • Don't judge rankings from one search on your office computer. Check from where your customers are.

Key takeaways

  • Search your exact business name first. That tells you whether you're missing or just not ranking.
  • Missing entirely usually means unverified, suspended, duplicated, recently edited, or marked closed.
  • Showing for your name but not for services is a ranking problem driven by relevance, distance, and prominence.
  • Check results from where your customers search, not from one spot.
  • Never create a second profile to get around the problem.

Common Questions

Why can I find my business by name but customers can't find it?

Your profile is live, but Google is ranking other businesses higher for the searches your customers use. That depends on relevance, distance, and prominence. Improving your category, profile, reviews, and website helps with the parts you control.

How long does a new Google Business Profile take to show up?

Google doesn't publish a timeline. Many verified profiles appear within days, and some take longer, especially after a review. Avoid making repeated edits while you wait.

Why does my business show up for me but not for others?

Results depend on the searcher's location and, to a degree, their own search history. Check in a private window and ask someone in your service area to search.

Should I add my city or service to the business name so it shows up?

No. Google's guidelines say the name should match your real-world name. Adding keywords can lead to a suspension, which removes the profile entirely.
